I started with what I already knew about the hanbok, the Rose of Sharon, the plum blossoms. The Rose of Sharon symbolizes endurance and resilience, and the plum blossoms represent hope that can survive even the coldest parts of life. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"\u003eFrom there, I explored things I’d never really learned about the endangered Oriental Scops owl, the yellow-beaked egret, the water deer. They became small touchpoints for a heritage I’ve spent a lot of time circling around but never fully felt at home in. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\"\u003eThe two women reflect the tension I’ve felt between who I am and who I was expected to be. One carries a tool of work, the other an antler—objects that hint at labor, survival, instinct, and inherited strength. They stand back-to-back, connected yet separate, much like my own relationship with my mother and the culture she wanted me to embody. The name \u003ci\u003eEsther\u003c\/i\u003e is one she believed signified dutifulness and obedience, but I later learned it also means \u003ci\u003estar\u003c\/i\u003e, something distant, luminous, and quietly powerful.
