Xenia
Xenia
Xenia was inspired by one of my older paintings from when I first began making art. The figure is caught mid-scream, yet what emerges are vines instead of sound. Those vines wrap around her, both constricting and guiding, representing the way chronic pain reshaped me in ways I never wanted, while also creating unexpected paths for growth.
The transformation continues in the caterpillar, cocoon, and rosy maple moths surrounding her. The rosy maple moth, one of the smallest silk moths, symbolizes gentle but undeniable change. These elements reflect how pain forced me into transitions I didn’t choose, yet still opened the door to new possibilities.
I named the piece Xenia, a word that means welcomed guest, hospitality, and also foreigner. Chronic pain entered my life like something strange and unwelcome, something I had to learn to live with, even as it altered the shape of who I was becoming.
