Valentina came from a period when I felt deeply disconnected from touch and from the kind of loving relationship I longed for. The name is a play on Valentine’s Day, a holiday centered on closeness and affection, created during a time when I felt the absence of those things more sharply than ever. The skeleton’s embrace is gentle but empty, a reflection of wanting to be held and not knowing where to find that warmth.
On her back, I placed symbols tied to longing, healing, and hope. The norigae represents blessings, love, and protection, as if offering a small prayer for connection. The yellow flower is St. John’s Wort, traditionally linked to healing emotional wounds and bringing light to dark places. The plum blossoms symbolize endurance and the ability to bloom in hardship. The Polyphemus moths represent vulnerability and transformation, the quiet change that happens in the dark while we wait for something better.
