Vivian

Vivian began as a digital reimagining of an older painting, but it quickly became something much more personal. I often struggle with chronic pain and at the time of creating this piece I was dealing with a deep, constant ache in my back that left me feeling exposed and vulnerable.

As the piece formed, it took on a dreamlike quality. The dandelion seeds drifting through the night sky became a quiet wish for healing. The fungus and small growths along the body reflected the feeling of being stuck in place by pain, caught between stillness and decay. The nighttime setting mirrors the isolation that chronic pain can bring, the sense of being alone with it even when you are not. I added cocoons as symbols of rebirth, a reminder that even in darkness or stagnation, something inside us is still trying to change.

I named the piece Vivian, meaning alive or lively, because that contrast felt true. It captures the reality of living with so much hurt and still holding on to hope, still moving forward in whatever ways I can.
